Rockford Penner

Rockford grew up in South East Manitoba with a family of musicians. He inherited his love for acoustic Appalachian music from his father, Dennis, an accomplished banjo-picker. His earliest stage experience came singing high tenor and playing back-up banjo with the Dennis Penner Family. Several years of classical training coupled with constant exposure to bluegrass and country music helped to shape a disciplined, practiced, and versatile artist. Rockford currently sings lead vocals and plays acoustic guitar for The Rock Ridge Pickers (TRRP), a traditional country band. He also fills in on the banjo and harmonica. His original songwriting exhibits a unique blend of Bluegrass modesty, sincerity and humour. Rockford has performed in numerous venues across Ontario, Western Canada, and the U.S. He has collaborated with well-known local musicians including Dan Thiessen “The Jake Brakes” and Harold Friesen “Jayc Harold”. Critics praise Rockford’s “strong tenor lead vocals”, and his “intelligent songwriting”. His first recording, a four song EP with TRRP was released in the spring of 2010. Since that time, Rockford has performed on many occasions with TRRP, including gospal festivals, town fairs, community events, fundraisers, and various private functions. A highlight for the band was their first stand-alone concert, Spring Fever in March of 2011. Their second recording, a full length CD is scheduled to be released in April of 2012. This ten song recording features nine of Rockford's original songs. They range from classic country love songs and real life humour to a testamony of his faith in Christ. This variety of songs are all a reflection of Rockford's personal life's journey.
